The Lovers

Cold Porcelain, with wire and aluminium foil structure

70 x 92 cm

April 2015

This piece is a symbol of the relationship between humans and animals. We effect each other in both good and bad ways. Humans take in animals as pets, create shelters for them, and try to help endangered species survive. Yet at the same time, we are the exact cause of their extinction. Animals have their survival instincts, which sometimes lead them to harm us. But then, we have pets, beings that are capable of being our 'best friend.' However, through all these years it is the coexistence between us that keeps the world in balance. We are like lovers, with a love-hate relationship. We embrace each other, yet hurt each other in the same process. But still we're all animals - we're bound to make mistakes.

I cam across many difficulties in this piece. It is mainly because of my new media, cold porcelain. However, it isn't exactly new, because I have tried making small sculpture out of it before, but neve ron e big enough to require an armature. This is why it was quite difficult making this sculpture. I had to research every step in making a big sculpture, from the armature to the finishing touches. Many times I made mistakes, and somehow corrected them. As for the ones I couldn't correct, I didn't mind since this piece isn't supposed to be perfect, like our relationships. This was a very eye opening experiecne for me, and the final result really satisfied me.
